Five Spooky Reads That Will Keep You Up at Night 👻
There’s something about this time of year that makes a spooky read even more appealing. As the nights draw in, the leaves turn brown, and we start reaching for cosy blankets and hot drinks, many of us find ourselves craving stories that send a shiver down our spines. 📚

But why do we love being frightened when we’re tucked up safely in our own homes? Why do we deliberately choose books filled with secrets, murder, betrayal and people who might not be quite what they seem?
I think part of the appeal is the thrill of being scared without being in any real danger. A good psychological thriller lets us experience fear, suspense and uncertainty from the safety of our favourite reading spot. We can explore the darkest corners of human nature, question everyone’s motives and try to solve the mystery before the author reveals all.
There’s also something wonderfully absorbing about a book that makes us say, “Just one more chapter,” only to realise an hour later that it’s well past bedtime! 😱
And autumn is the perfect excuse to indulge. So, if you’re looking for your next chilling read, here are five books that have stayed with me, followed by a bonus recommendation of onw of my own!
🦴 1. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Some books stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page, and The Lovely Bones is one of them.
The story is narrated by Susie Salmon, a fourteen-year-old girl who has been murdered.
Watching from her own version of heaven, she observes the devastating impact of her death on her family and the life continuing around them.
What makes this book so compelling is its unusual perspective. Rather than simply following an investigation, we see grief, guilt and the struggle to carry on through the eyes of someone who can no longer participate in the world she has left behind.
It’s haunting, heartbreaking and deeply unsettling, exploring the fragility of life and the terrible consequences of violence. It’s not a conventional spooky story, but its atmosphere and emotional intensity make it an unforgettable read.
Perfect for: Readers who enjoy haunting stories that explore grief, family and the darker side of human nature.
🔍 2. Ask for Andrea by Noelle W. Ihli
If you enjoy thrillers that get under your skin, Ask for Andrea is a book worth adding to your reading list.
The story follows three women whose deaths become connected through a chilling discovery. Each has a different perspective, but they share a common enemy, and their stories gradually come together.
One of the most compelling aspects of this novel is the way it explores vulnerability, trust and the people who deliberately exploit them. It taps into the everyday decisions women make to protect themselves and the uncomfortable reality that danger doesn't always announce itself.
The multiple perspectives keep the story moving, while the tension builds as the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to keep reading because you need to know how everything connects.
Perfect for: Readers who love dark, fast-paced thrillers with a powerful emotional core and a sense of mounting dread.
🧙♀️ 3. The Witch by Freida McFadden
Freida McFadden knows how to make readers suspicious of practically everyone, and that’s a big part of her appeal.
With The Witch, you can expect an unsettling premise, secrets waiting to be uncovered and the sort of tension that encourages you to question what you think you know. The title alone promises an atmospheric read that feels particularly suited to the Halloween season. 🎃
What I enjoy about spooky psychological fiction is the uncertainty. Is someone really dangerous, or are we being led to believe something that isn't true? Can we trust what we're seeing, or is there another explanation hiding beneath the surface?
That sense of uncertainty is what makes a thriller so difficult to put down. When an author can keep you second-guessing your assumptions, reading becomes an active pursuit: you're not just following the story; you're trying to outsmart it
.
Perfect for: Readers who enjoy sinister atmospheres, unsettling secrets and the anticipation of a twist.
👀 4. Watching You by Lisa Jewell
Lisa Jewell is brilliant at exploring the secrets that can exist behind apparently ordinary doors, and Watching You is a terrific example of the appeal of domestic suspense.
Set in Bristol, the novel centres on a murder and the people whose lives intersect around it. As the story unfolds, we discover that the seemingly familiar world of neighbours, families and relationships contains far more secrets than anyone might imagine.
What makes this sort of thriller so compelling is its familiarity. These aren't necessarily distant, fantastical horrors. They're rooted in the places we live, the people we encounter and the private lives we rarely get to see.
Jewell builds suspense by gradually revealing different perspectives and allowing our assumptions to shift. Just when you think you've worked something out, another detail changes the picture.
It's a reminder that we can live alongside people for years without ever truly knowing them. 😨
Perfect for: Fans of domestic noir, complicated relationships, unreliable impressions and mysteries that keep you guessing.
📱 5. Friend Request by Laura Marshall
Social media has changed the way we connect with people, but it has also created new ways for old secrets to resurface. Friend Request takes that unsettling idea and turns it into a gripping psychological thriller.
The story begins when Louise receives a Facebook friend request from Maria Weston, a woman from her school days who has been dead for more than twenty-five years.
It's an instantly intriguing premise. Who is behind the request? What really happened in the past? And what if the things Louise has tried to forget aren't as safely buried as she believes?
The novel plays on one of our most recognisable modern fears: that something we'd rather keep private might suddenly become public. It also explores the lasting consequences of school friendships, bullying and the choices we make when we're young.
It's particularly effective because the threat comes through something so ordinary. A simple notification becomes a reason to question the past, and every new revelation makes the situation more disturbing.
Perfect for: Readers who love secrets from the past, social-media suspense and the unsettling feeling that someone knows more about you than they should.
❤️ Bonus recommendation: The Wife I Was by Maria Frankland
Of course, I couldn't finish a list of psychological thrillers for the spooky season without recommending one of my own!
In The Wife I Was, being stuck in the same house as an estranged husband is intolerable. Being treated as if you no longer exist is even worse. And then comes the realisation that something isn't right…
I love writing stories that explore the secrets lurking inside relationships and the ways people can manipulate those closest to them. Sometimes the most frightening situations aren't supernatural at all. They're the ones that could happen behind the closed doors of an ordinary home.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers about marriage, manipulation, hidden truths and the people we think we know best, this might be the perfect spooky-season read for you.
🕯️ Why do we keep coming back for more?
Perhaps the real attraction of spooky reads is that they allow us to explore fear in a safe space. We can experience the uncertainty, imagine the worst and follow a trail of clues without actually putting ourselves in danger.
Or perhaps we simply love the feeling of being completely absorbed in a story, desperate to discover the truth.
Whatever the reason, there's nothing quite like a gripping psychological thriller on a dark autumn evening. Just remember to check who's at the window before you settle down for the night! 👻
